My name is Andy and I recently graduated with a B.A. in International Relations from Boston University this past May. I have studied abroad in both Copenhagen, Denmark and Quito, Ecuador where I gained keen insights into new cultures and how to integrate myself within them. In my most recent study abroad experience in Quito, I lived with an Ecuadorian host family and developed my Spanish speaking proficiency to a high conversational level. Moreover, I was able to use my Spanish to help university students master critical skills in their English classes.
My ambition to teach others is still passionate as I will be serving with the Peace Corps as a literacy promoter in primary schools in the Dominican Republic starting in March of 2019. To help prepare, I have been working meticulously on an online 150 hour TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course through an the internationally accredited organization, CIEE , and I expect to receive my certification by October. As such, I am excited to incorporate the innovative teaching practices that I have learned in the course in my tutoring lessons here on Verbling.
As someone who has been in numerous language courses throughout my academic career, I have learned a very important truth: the key is to make learning fun! Though at times much of the grammar and vocabulary can feel like a struggle to get through, it certainly doesn't have to be. I believe that any and all learning experiences can be made authentic and significant to the learner. My tutoring lessons will be student-focused and will first and foremost respond to his/her needs. Moreover, my schedule is quite flexible and I will do my very best to accommodate whichever times work best for the students.
