Hakkımda

Hi, I’m Junko Hatanaka. I have been teaching Japanese as a second language at colleges in the US for more than 25 years. I’m currently living in Nara, Japan, temporarily while I renew my American work visa.

I was born and raised in Nara, and after working in Osaka in the marketing field for a few years, I moved to the US to study communication (MS) and Japanese linguistics (MA) as a graduate student. In addition to having taught in the classroom at a range of levels from beginner (I helped produce some video clips for beginners) to advanced (reading authentic material, conversation, JLPT preparation, extensive reading, etc.), I also taught an online course last semester.
I always try to make my lessons fun and exciting, and I often see those keywords in my students’ evaluations.

One of my interests is how English speakers learn Kansai dialect. If you’re interested in Kansai-ben, I’d love to help!
Another of my interests in teaching Japanese is “communication strategies”. As a foreign language learner who has also studied some Spanish and Chinese (in addition to speaking English as my second language), I’m always trying to find the best and most efficient ways for learners to accomplish goals such as mastering specific grammar patterns, improving pronunciation, and increasing their vocabulary. And even if a learner has no knowledge of one specific expression, we can practice some techniques for how to “survive” in such situations by focusing on communication.

I’ll be going back to the US in the fall of 2021, but before that, I’d like to work with more diverse learners while I’m in Japan. I look forward to working with you!
