Key for abbreviations: S = Subject; V = Verb; O = Object; IO = Indirect Object

All you need for a complete sentence is a subject and a verb.
(The sentence pattern here is S-V.)

A. Example
  1. Sue drove.
  2. Sue crashed.
  3. Sue cried.
Sometimes, though, the sentence needs a who or what to complete the meaning. This word is the direct object. (The sentence pattern here is S-V-O.) You have a direct object ONLY with a verb that shows action.

B. Example
  1. Sue broke her arm.
  2. She got flowers.
  3. She lost her job.
Sometimes you also might have a who or a what that "receives" the direct object. This word is the indirect object. (The sentence pattern here is S-V-I-O.) You have an indirect object only if you (a.) have a verb that shows action AND (b.) have a direct object.

C. Example
  1. The insurance company sent Sue a form.
  2. They gave her a deadline.
  3. Then they gave her a big check.
If you have a verb that shows state of being (one of the linking verbs--a form of "to be"), then that verb can be followed by a predicate nominative (a noun or a pronoun that RENAMES the subject).

D. Example
  1. It was John.
  2. This is she.
If you have a verb that shows state of being (one of the linking verbs--a form of "to be"), then that verb can be followed by a predicate adjective (a word that describes the subject).

E. Example
  1. The game was intense.
  2. The players were tired.
Remember that there are 8 parts of speech in English. You must look at a sentence to see what JOB each word is doing in order to decide what part of speech it is in that sentence.
1. Noun
2. Pronoun
3. Verb
4. Adverb
5. Preposition
6. Adjective
(Object of the Preposition)
7. Direct Object
8. Indirect Object
